ARMS Research Information and Reporting Special Interest Group Event

What next for national research assessments? Engaging with global approaches to responsible research evaluation.

The ARMS RIR SIG is very pleased to host a presentation by Professor James Wilsdon, Director of the Research on Research Institute, University College London.  Professor Wilsdon is a transdisciplinary social scientist and meta-researcher on the governance and management of science and research, and the relationship between evidence and decision-making.

For the past decade, James has been centrally involved in research assessment reforms in the UK and Europe,  In 2014, he was invited to chair an independent UK government review of research metrics, published as The Metric Tide. He subsequently chaired a European Commission expert group on Next Generation Metrics, and in 2022, with Stephen Curry and Elizabeth Gadd, revisited these debates in Harnessing the Metric Tide.

He recently co-authored a feature article in the ‘Campus Morning Mail’: Rankings tail wags the strategy dog (13 March 2023).  As referenced in the article, with the cancellation of ERA-2023 and EI-2024 and similar debates about national research assessments in the UK and New Zealand, is it time for more engagement with global advances in responsible research evaluation?

The session will be co-facilitated by Michelle Duryea, RIR SIG Convenor from Edith Cowan University (Fellow of ARMS) and recent ARMS representative on the ARC’s ERA Transition Working Group, and Justin Shearer, Associate Director, Research Information and Engagement from the University of Melbourne and ARMS Representative on the INORMS Research Evaluation Group.
