This module is designed to provide participants with an overview of the New Zealand Research, Science and Technology sector.
The module covers the role of government, business and higher education in the national research and innovation system, funding mechanisms, codes and current issues. The module examines research and innovation policy settings in New Zealand and looks at New Zealand’s performance in international standings. It also looks at the key stakeholders in the New Zealand research and innovation system, including the main funding agencies and briefly at ethics and integrity codes and the role of research managers in expediting research.
Delivered online via the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS), this module is designed to support flexible, self-paced learning.
Key Learning Outcomes
After completing this module, participants will have covered:
- An introduction to some key concepts of research relevant for an understanding of the structure and culture of the sector’s stakeholders;
- Brief descriptions of the players in the sector or research and innovation system;
- An overview of the funding regime in New Zealand;
- Key national drivers of research and development;
- Measuring quality and performance; and
- Current issues facing the sector.

The broad scope of this module makes it relevant to a wide audience from across the research management field including:
- Research management professionals relatively new to their role;
- Postgraduate students and postdoctoral positions as they embark on their research career;
- Executives and officers of relevant organisations with an interest in research and innovation;
- Private sector managers requiring background on New Zealand research and innovation; and
- Research Management Professionals wishing to update or broaden their knowledge of the New Zealand research and innovation system.
Research management professionals from all organisations and institutions will benefit from this module including those from:

Note: This is a compulsory module for participants in the ARMS Foundation Level Accreditation Program (FLAP) in New Zealand. It may also be undertaken independently for professional development.

- The module is delivered online via Moodle unless otherwise specified.
- All intellectual property rights in the module content remain with ARMS. Reproduction without prior written consent is prohibited.
- You may not reproduce any part of the module material without the prior written consent of ARMS.
- In the event of LMS unavailability, ARMS will provide alternative access to materials.
- All assessments, including quizzes, must be completed within Moodle.

Module Access Time
Participants have two (2) weeks to complete the module from the time they begin it in Moodle (not from the registration date).
Getting Started
Once registered and payment is confirmed, the module will appear under Online Courses in your ARMS portal. Click the module title under Enrolled Courses to access Moodle.
ARMS CANCELLATION POLICY
ARMS complies with Australian Consumer Law in regard to refunds. We ask that you carefully select the Module before submitting a Registration as the Registration is non-cancellable and the Registration Fee is non-refundable.
We understand that under extenuating circumstances, there may be reasons why the Registrant is unable to complete the registered module. Where evidence can be successfully provided to support the Registrant’s circumstances, consideration may be given to transfer the Registration to another eligible ARMS member. Such requests must be made in writing.
