Can research actually be measured? A presentation and discussion of three approaches to research assessment & reporting

The renamed Research Information, Systems and Evaluation (RISE) SIG (previously the Research Informtion and Reporting SIG) will hold its first meeting for 2026 in February.

We invite you to join us to hear from a range of institutions and how they approach research assessment and how systems support this.

Speakers with cover institutional approaches as well as discipline specific, from quantitative traditional research assessment to non-traditional research areas.

Questions and discussion are strongly encouraged as we all collectively work to ensure effective and fair assessment of research.

Ms Gaby Bright - Monash University

 

 

 

 

Gaby Bright is the Faculty Research & Graduate Research Manager for the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, at Monash University. Monash has been ranked in the top 5 globally of the QS Subject Rankings for Pharmacy & Pharmacology for 8+ years.

Gaby has led the review and modelling of research metrics for her Faculty’s academic performance standards in 2023 & 2025. The modelling included assessment of a range of quantitative research metrics including income, graduate research, and citation. Citation analysis has included citations per publication, journal impact factor, & field weighted citation impact and she will speak about the challenges of many research metrics and her insights from the modelling process.

 

Dr Tania Wilmann - James Cook University

 

 

 

 

Tania Wilmann is Head, Research Strategy and Performance at James Cook University and has been involved in performance analysis of individuals, groups and institutions since 2014. She contributed to setting the institutional Business and Corporate performance measures at JCU in 2022 and monitors progress towards institutional targets annually. She has also recently updated the Researcher Performance Framework, a set of KPIs used as a guide, to provide a standard for minimum performance for individual researchers.

 

Dr Sneha Abraham - Monash University

 

 

 

 

Sneha Abraham is the Senior Manager, Research, Graduate Research & Enterprise in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at Monash University. She works closely with Faculty leadership to shape research strategy, external engagement, and performance frameworks for creative and practice-led disciplines.

With a strong focus on policy, process, and system improvement, Sneha has led initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of research support across the Faculty. In her presentation, she will briefly reflect on the challenges of assessing research quality and impact in creative practice-led disciplines, and explore emerging approaches to research assessment that move beyond traditional metrics to more appropriately capture creative, cultural, and societal value.
