Supporting Indigenous Research and Engagement

Presented on October, 18 2023 by Ms Mandy Downing - Curtin University and Mr Peter Rogers - Edith Cowan University. Facilitated by Dr Debbie Thackray - Curtin University.

Session Summary:

Aboriginal researchers encounter institutional barriers to Indigenous Australian research, and less experienced non-Indigenous researchers often need more understanding of the measures required to protect Indigenous knowledges in research. Yet, few institutions have taken active steps towards identifying and addressing such challenges.

This presentation showcased the collaboration between the Dean of Indigenous Futures and the Research Office at Curtin University in developing research agreement templates suitable for Indigenous Australian research projects. The approach presented in the session aimed to look at ways to minimise lengthy delays for those conducting Indigenous research through pre-determined clauses within the agreement templates. This approach presented demonstrated principles of Indigenous involvement in University governance as well as  building upon the University’s commitment to reconciliation.  This approach recognises that bespoke contractual agreements are more suited for the needs of Aboriginal researchers and projects.

Please note that this session was not recorded upon request of the presenters.
