NZ government announcements in December 2024 to drop funding for humanities and social science from the Marsden Fund and reduce funding for Cluster 2 of Horizon Europe, and the Science System Advisory Group report release in January 2025 signal some of the largest changes to the NZ RS&I system in decades.

PRESENTER:
Dr Simon Lovatt - University of Waikato
Simon has been Director of Research & Enterprise at the University of Waikato for eight years, was previously Executive Officer and a member of the Science Strategy team in the Crown Research Institute AgResearch, and before that led research teams in food systems and technology and agricultural systems and value chain modelling. He is a coauthor with Dr Andrew West and former Minister of Science, Hon Margaret Austin, of a book chapter on the 1991 NZ science system reforms.
Dr Kate Muise - Science New Zealand
Dr Kate Muise is Chief Executive at Science New Zealand, which is a grouping of New Zealand's Crown Research Institutes. Kate has an extensive background of working at the nexus of science, innovation and technology and the public sector. Kate joined Science New Zealand from her role as Manager Specialised Investments in the Science System Investment and Performance branch at the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. The Team is responsible for managing critical science investments that underpin the capability of the sector.
She has a PhD in Ecology and Biodiversity from Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, in partnership with Plant & Food Research Ltd. Her research focused on the biosynthetic control of red, purple and yellow plant pigments.
Kate is passionate about strengthening connectivity and impact of the Aotearoa New Zealand science system.
Dr James Hutchinson - KiwiNet
Dr James Hutchinson is Chief Executive at KiwiNet, which is a grouping of 19 public research organisations that transform scientific discoveries into new business, for all. KiwiNet champions people who commercialise research by helping them to access the tools, connections, investment and support they need to create amazing new products and services.
James has experience in supporting research and innovation in NZ, the UK and internationally, with a particular focus on the life sciences and global societal challenges. He is passionate about the important role that science and the scientific community have to play in growing our economy into new high-tech and knowledge-based sectors, informing public policy and changing our world for the better.
