Transforming Industry HDR Engagement in Australia: Insights from the Australian HDR Industry Engagement Community of Practice

In this session we will:

• Explore the changing landscape of industry engaged Higher Degree Research management through the experience of the Australian HDR Industry Engagement Community of Practice

• Review findings from the 2025 survey of members and place in context of more recent developments including the Australian Council of Graduate Research Industry HDR survey and

• Examine and discuss current and emerging issues in the management of Industry HDR in Australia

Simon Kalucy
Senior Program Manager, Industry, UNSW

I am the Senior Program Manger for Industry at the Graduate Research School, UNSW. I am responsible for facilitating and managing industry PhD and Masters programs in collaboration with external partners from across business, all levels of government, NGOs and community groups. Reach out to me if you are interested in understanding more about these research degree programs. I work with UNSW Academics, external stakeholders and Higher Degree Research students. The majority of my career has been spent in Higher Education, including more than 10 years working in the HDR management space. I love seeing a good project come together with great outcomes for everyone involved.

Strategic Programs Coordinator, Macquarie University

I have been working in education for the past 20 years, having started this journey with the Temporary Residents Program, moving to the NSW Government Schools and TAFE International Office, working at Western Sydney Institute of TAFE and finally to Higher Education at Macquarie University. This journey has permitted much international travel, provided opportunity for me to present at events and conferences, meet a lot of people working in the education space, and gain a deeper understanding of both the International Education sector, but also the Higher Education sector in Graduate Research.
