NZ and the PI Chapter: The Increasing Importance of Impact in the NZ Research System - 20 October 2026

The 2026 Science Investment Plan, the Transition Research Fund call for proposals and Pillar Investment Plans that are expected in early October illustrate the increasing importance of impact in designing, proposing and carrying out research in the NZ system. A panel of Research Impact experts will explore how research managers can support researchers to show the potential impact of their research in proposals and convert their existing research into valuable impact for New Zealand.

Dr Kara Scally-Irvine
KSI Consulting Limited

Kara has a PhD (University of Queensland), for which her thesis was “Biodiversity conservation and poverty alleviation: factors influencing their integration in Cambodia”, a PGDipSci(Distinction) – Environmental Science (Otago) BSc – Zoology, Psychology (Otago) BCom – Management (Otago).

Kara is the Principal of KSI Solutions, where her aim is “Turning information into intelligence”, a Board member of the Aotearoa New Zealand Evaluation Association (ANZEA) and an expert on assessing and guiding impact in research and other initiatives.

Daniel Milossavljevic
SageWell Tapui Limited

Daniel is Director of SageWell Tapui Limited, where he provides research impact support services.

Currently Science Programme Advisor at Antarctica New Zealand, he was previously Advisor – Impact at Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research, and has contributed to the Impact Planning and Evaluation Network (IPEN) and Aotearoa Research Impact Community of Practice (ARICOP). Daniel authored a number of scholarly articles on how research impact can be better understood, supported and governed, and has over 25 years’ experience in the research sector, including nearly a decade in research management

Simon is the Director of Research & Enterprise at the University of Waikato and has been a member of the ARMS NZ/PI Chapter for about 5 years.
