PRESIDENT'S UPDATE

What a busy time it has been for us all! I really can’t believe that we are only a few weeks away from the end of the year. There still seems so much to do. This is my first update as the new President of ARMS, following the wonderful service of Dr Ross McLennan, who has been inspirational in the role. We also welcome a new Board for ARMS, whom, with existing Board members, were inducted on 24 November.

 

Many of you attended the Virtual Conference – in fact we had a fabulous turnout with over 1100 delegates across 11 countries.

I am pleased to report that ARMS is currently preparing a proposal to bid for the 2025 INORMS Congress. This is in conjunction with the Malaysian Research Management Association (MyRMA). There will be some other great bids coming through from other countries – wherever it’s held will be a win for research management.

 

This year, and every year, wouldn’t be possible without the tireless work of our ARMS volunteers who have supported all manner of activities relevant to research management and our ARMS Strategy. Thank you!

2022 will hopefully be a year of renewal for us all as globally we get on top of the COVID-pandemic. It’s an absolute understatement to see that research has made this happen as we all know. But you as Research Management Professionals, in any way or shape have been equally as critical in supporting all forms of research, COVID response and recovery and of course dealing with life.  

 

Please take the time to recover and rejuvenate over the New Year period. I’d really encourage you to participate in ARMS activities and be involved directly in Special interest Groups, Working Groups and various other Committees in 2022.

NEW BOARD OF ARMS

 

The New Board of ARMS was ratified at the Annual General Meeting held on the 3rd of November 2021.  We formally welcome:

New Board members were formally inducted and have undergone legal and financial training at a session held on the 24th of November 2021. The first official meeting of the new Board is scheduled for the 28th of January 2022. 

JANET DIBB-LEIGH AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO RESEARCH MANAGEMENT PRACTICE 

 

The Society congratulates Professor Gayle Morris from the Australian Institute of Business as the 2021 recipient of the JDL Award announced at an award ceremony on the 4th of November.  Congratulations Gayle!

2020/2021 REPORT TO MEMBERS - COMING SOON!

 

Members to be advised that our annual Report to Members will be formally released at the end of January 2022.  We thank all volunteer members for their contributions to this report.  Details will be made available via the Member's Portal. 

RESEARCH INTEGRITY ADVISOR PRACTICAL GUIDE - COMING SOON!

 

The Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) and the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) will be shortly announcing the release of the long anticipated Practical Guide to Support Research Integrity Advisors (RIAs).  While the online guide will provide an overview of the requirements of the Australian Code for Responsible Conduct of Research, its main focus is to assist RIAs or those dealing with responsible conduct of research in the practical outworking of their responsibilities.

 

Further details will be provided shortly. 

THE OPEN RESEARCH TOOLKIT NOW AVAILABLE 

 

The Open Research Toolkit was created by the Open Research Working Group, comprising representatives of the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) and the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL). The Toolkit supports Australasian institutions to implement or further develop open research policy, strategy and practice.

 

The Toolkit contains information, resources and good practice examples related to all aspects of open research, including policy, governance, pathways and processes. It also includes resources for individual researchers interested in engaging in open research practices and training materials for support services fostering open research within their organisations.

ACCREDITATION, EDUCATION & TRAINING 

FOUNDATION AND ESTABLISHED LEVEL ACCREDITATION PROGRAMS FOR 2022 

 

 

Did you know that the Society offers three of its compulsory Foundation Level Accreditation modules online via Moodle?  Registrations are open any time for the following modules: 

 

1.1-Aus: The National Research and Innovation System in Australia

1.2-Aus: Legislation as it Affects Research in Australia

1.3: Understanding Research and Researchers

 

The Society is also pleased to announce that the New Zealand and Singapore region specific modules  for 1.1: The National Research and Innovation System and 1.2: Legislation as it Affects Research will be available online via the Moodle platform shortly.

FOUNDATION MODULE CURRENTLY ON OFFER

This module provides an insight into the current and evolving practices around the management of scholarships for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates.

The Society is pleased to release a draft program schedule for its  ever-popular PD Sessions @ Zoom. 

 

These are one hour webinars which cover a broad range of research management related topics. 

 

Registration is free to ARMS members,  fee applies for non-members.

 

All ARMS members are encouraged to attend any sessions. Accredited members will automatically be credited 1 CPD hour per session attended.

 

  A final program schedule will be made available in early 2022.

We have a guest speaker, Professor Raymond Chan, who will speak about his new role at Flinders University, the challenges for research management, and his plans for the Caring Futures Institute.

DEVLOPING YOUR CAREER IN RESEARCH MANAGEMENT 

The Victorian ARMS Chapter Committee invites you to our end of year event that, for the first time in two years, will be held in person.

 

The event will begin with a one-hour panel session, where our panellists will provide advice on careers in research management and answer your questions, followed by food and drinks.

RESEARCH INFORMATION AND REPORTING SIG UPDATE

International Framework for Responsible Research Evaluation Released

 

The International Network of Research Management Societies (INORMS) Research Evaluation Group (REG) has recently released an 18-page guide to their framework for responsible research evaluation called SCOPE.

 

Established in 2018, the INORMS REG has been working to better understand and develop best practices in responsible research evaluation with the aim of providing practitioners and senior leaders the tools they need to effectively and responsibly evaluate research. The SCOPE Framework for responsible research evaluation resulted from their work. 

Over the past year the Group have partnered with a range of funders, institutions and publishers to apply SCOPE to a series of real-life evaluation problems with the aim of testing the model. The guide draws on the learnings of these explorations, many of which have been included as case studies. The aim of the guide is to assist any organisation seeking to design a responsible research evaluation. It was designed by their publishing partner, Emerald Publishing and is now available as an open resource under a CC-BY licence.

The Australian Research Council (ARC) produces an annual publication, Making a Difference: Outcomes of ARC supported research, which celebrates some of the great stories from our research community. We are always looking for high-impact ARC-funded research stories to be included in our upcoming editions of this publication.

We also publish research highlights on the ARC website, issue a regular quarterly newsletter, ARChway, and can help promote any ARC-funded activities.
