UP in ARMS - Issue 127

NEWSLETTER OF ARMS

September - October 2022

PRESIDENT'S UPDATE

Dear Colleagues,

And another month ticks over! We’re now officially in the last quarter of this year, and so far it has certainly been full on! I hope that you are all doing well and planning some time for a well-earned break before it starts again….

It certainly has been busy in research-management land with many consultations and related engagements underway.

Within Australia, the Directors of Research SIG met recently in Canberra in the first in- person meeting since before Covid. It was really great to re-meet those long-serving Directors and welcome new members on-board. The ARC, NHMRC,  Department of Education presented as did some of our members on a range of topics and issues including ERA, Assurance Frameworks, Gender diversity in funding applications, National Research Infrastructure, research contracting and benchmarking.

It is also rewarding to see that two members of ARMS are on the ARC ERA Transition Working Group – Tony Sheil (Director Office for Research, Griffith University) and Michelle Duryea (Edith Cowan University and Convenor, Director SIG for Research Information and Reporting). As senior practitioners they are exceedingly well-placed to make significant contributions. We look forward to seeing other members on national committees across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.

You will also have seen in a separate email and invitation to provide feedback on the revised Terms of Reference for our Standing Committees. Regular review and updates are part of good governance and practice – I encourage you to review!

Finally, I hope you all took time out to celebrate National Research Managers and Administrators Day in September. No matter what you do in your role, you and your colleagues are critical to making research happen!

Yours in ARMS,

Dr Tania Bezzobs

ARMS President

The overall objective is to ensure that that the functions of these Standing Committees remain current and relevant.

On behalf of the Board, I am pleased to invite you to provide feedback on the proposed revised Terms of Reference for the following Standing Committees:

PD SESSIONS @ ZOOM: RESEARCH INTEGRITY - NAVIGATING PRACTICE AND COMPLIANCE

Research integrity is core to all research and research management practice. But it is more than being compliant with NHMRC and ARC rules and guidelines. In this session we will hear from people who work at the coalface of research and research administration. You will hear from one of the authors of the recently launched ARMS Research Integrity Toolkit (Dr Daniel Barr), an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researcher (A/Prof Odette Gibson), and a senior research integrity officer (Rebekah O’Shea).

The speakers will explore the broader issues in research integrity but then focus on the practical implications for researchers and research administrators. Navigating the research integrity minefield can seem daunting, with serious implications from transgressions for researchers and institutions like. Our speakers will help you to get you grounded in the fundamentals and also understand the broader integrity issues for conducting research, particularly with the Aboriginal community.

Presented by:  Dr Daniel Barr - RMIT, Research and Innovation, Associate Professor Odette Gibson - SAHMRI Wardliparringa Aboriginal Health Equity, and Rebekah O’Shea - Senior Research Integrity Officer, University of Adelaide, Office of Research Ethics, Compliance and Integrity.

CHAPTER & SIG UPDATES/EVENTS

LAUNCH OF THE POST AWARD RESEARCH MANAGEMENT SIG

The newly rebranded Post Award Research Management SIG will be launched at the SIG FEST later in the year, and will kick off in 2023. Co-convenors are Connie Killey and Frank Anastasopoulos.

Membership is growing and we are particularly pleased to have the NHMRC Post Award team confirm their participation in the SIG, with the Director, Sandra Freshwater, joining the SIG, and also nominating a delegate to attend meetings in her absence.

A reminder to all research office directors and executive directors to nominate up to 2 senior staff from your university, preferable the people leading your post award and research finance areas. Ideally we would like at least one senior person from every university!

Along with the NHMRC, we have Melb Uni, Monash, Deakin, UWA, UTS, UTAS, RMIT, and QUT represented so far. The commitment will be quarterly meetings, three (3) will be via zoom, with a 4th meeting to be either in person or hybrid in conjunction with the ARMS annual conference. Our intention is for it to be an active group, working on things like standardised reporting templates between our institutions for example! Please contact either Connie or Frank, (by way of the ARMS Executive Office) to participate, or to nominate a delegate from your institution if you haven’t done so already.
