PRESIDENT'S UPDATE
February - March 2021

A core value of ARMS is supporting and promoting equity and diversity in the profession of research management. It goes without saying that whilst our roles are highly dependent on systems and processes, we operate in a person-centric environment.

Our success in delivering support to research and researchers comes from the interactions with other people: within our teams; across our offices; with researchers; liaising with other organisations. This happens best when every individual feels safe and valued (irrespective of their gender, sexuality, race, or other characteristics). It is only in these condition that everyone is free to pursue and fulfil their potential.

From my experience, ARMS members are an inclusive group. However, there is always more that we can do to raise awareness to issues, facilitate change, and improve our environments for the benefit of all. I ask every member of ARMS to take a moment today to reflect on what actions they can take to make their workplace a safer and more inclusive environment for all.

DEMONSTRATING THE IMPACT OF RESEARCH MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONALS

Strategic Priority 2 of the ARMS Strategic Plan is the Promotion of the Profession of Research Management.  One way to achieve this priority is to capture, document and share stories that demonstrates the valuable contributions made by Research Management Professionals to the research enterprise.

To facilitate this aim, we are very pleased to announce the release of a template that has been developed to assist in capturing a range of Research Management Professionals impact case studies.

We now invite ARMS members to share stories of situations, actions and outcomes that describe how the skills of Research Management Professionals have benefited the research enterprise. The overall aim is to produce a collection of impact case studies that will help to identify lessons to share with research management professionals and to demonstrate the value of the profession of research management to key stakeholders and influencers. For a copy of the template click here.

"Research management is about boundary spanning. Whether doing pre-award or post-award jobs, researcher managers are building networks and influences to facilitate boundary-crossing, for example between the administrative and research communities, to enable rigorous and impactful research."

What do you find most rewarding and most challenging about working in research management?

"The challenge is to optimise innovation and compliance in research management and the rewarding moment is seeing research managers’ professional growth."
