THE YEAR THAT WAS 2022

This year ARMS successfully delivered all Foundation Level Accreditation Program (FLAP) Modules at least once during the year, as well as multiple offerings of the Master Classes.

LEADERSHIP, MANAGEMENT AND STRATEGIC THINKING PROGRAM

We are pleased to advise that fourteen (14) members of ARMS recently participated in Element 1 of the ARMS Established Level Accreditation Program (ELAP). Element 1, the Leadership, Management and Strategic Thinking Program, was delivered over four (4) days to participants located across Australia, from WA to NSW/QLD, and Singapore.

Participants engaged in a comprehensive set of workshop topics covering leadership styles, gender and diversity, leading change, negotiating difficult conversations, how to influence, building an effective Research Office and working through organisational strategy.

The program was well received, with participants submitting a reflective assessment piece upon how the program has changed the way they operate in their current roles.

Congratulation to all participants completing the program.

ESTABLISHED LEVEL ACCREDITATION PROGRAM (ELAP)

In early 2023 ARMS will be undertaking a new call (EOI) for individuals wishing to become accredited as an Accredited Research Manager (Established) or ARM(E). The program, which can be completed over three (3) years, allows participants to enhance their leadership, management, and content skills to become more effective research leaders in the rapidly evolving research and innovation sector.

2023 MODULE & MASTER CLASS SCHEDULE

ARMS wishes to advise that the 2023 schedule for both the Foundation Level Accreditation Program (FLAP) modules and master classes has not been finalised. We expect to be able to finalise the schedules in early 2023 once our Training Fellows have been able to confirm their availability. Updates will provided in the February Accreditation newsletter as well as on the ARMS website.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Continuing Professional Development is a requirement for maintaining accreditation at the Foundation (ARMF) and Advanced (ARMA) levels. Accredited members are required to accumulate a minimum of sixty (60) hours over three (3) years. The three (3) year period commences upon accreditation and is restarted every three years thereafter. Accredited members may lodge CPD applications, or view their current CPD, via their CPD Diaries in their member portals.

CPD Diaries

In 2021, ARMS created CPD entries in all member portals to indicate when individuals became accredited and when each three (3) year CPD cycle commences and finishes. At that time, accredited members had their current three (3) year CPD cycle extended to four (4) years in response to the impact of COVID on some members.

Review of CPD

All accredited members are encouraged to regularly review the status of their CPD and ensure that CPD applications are lodged within twelve (12) months of the completion of an activity.

Guidelines

Please see below the following CPD guidelines for activities which may accrue CPD:

ARMS activities not being undertaken as part of ELAP;
Formal postgraduate study and other tertiary courses relevant to research administration and/or management not undertaken as part of a degree course;
Conference attendance, workshops, seminars, and other similar activities delivered or facilitated by recognised practitioners in the field of research management;
Programs and courses which are not directly related to research management, but which build an individual’s personal knowledge and skills may also be considered (up to a max of 10 hours over a three-year period). These may include cultural awareness programs, mental health, first aid programs etc.;
Learning activities in the workplace which enhance research management knowledge or skills; Service to ARMS, sister societies or other similar bodies up to a maximum of 30 hours over a three-year period;
Preparation and/or presentation of courses, talks and other material at research management workshops and conferences; and
Any other structured activities not covered by the above, but which satisfy the objectives of these Guidelines.

Automatic Approval

Please note that ARMS automatically approves CPD for activities that have been registered for via the ARMS website and where attendance can be confirmed. For Zoom sessions, attendance is confirmed via the Zoom attendance report.

Supporting Documentation

Supporting documentation is required to substantiate claims for any event that is not a module, master class, elective or ARMS in-house event. Supporting documentation can be a brochure, agenda, or a copy of the training program for an event. Verification from the line supervisor or a certificate of attendance is required and may be uploaded as a copy of an email.

Additional Professional Development Opportunities

In addition to Accreditation programs, ARMS offers monthly PD Sessions @ Zoom, the opportunity to become a Training Fellow, to join Special Interest Groups (SIGs) or to contribute to the management of a Chapter Committee. All of these opportunities allow you to build upon your skill base and or gain experience.
