Research funding: A pathway to best practice
This elective is delivered over three (3) partial days:

- Wednesday 27 March 2024, 12:00PM - 3:00PM AEDT
Participants are required to attend all (3) sessions.
Presenter: Professor Moira Clay, Moira Clay Consulting Pty Ltd
Professor Moira Clay is one of Australia’s foremost experts in research strategy. She is a transformational leader and a highly experienced facilitator, with an extensive knowledge of the changing research agenda. She has a reputation for professionalism and integrity and is known for her collaborative and inclusive approach. Moira has extensive senior executive experience in research institutes in Victoria, NSW and WA - including 6 months as Acting Director of the Telethon Kids Institute. She was President of the Australian Society for Medical Research in 2003 and ARMS in 2013, leading significant public, political and scientific advocacy initiatives. In 2018, she was nominated as a Fellow of ARMS, acknowledging her enduring and substantial contributions to research management, and her active philanthropic involvement was profiled in a TEDx Fremantle talk. In 2011, she completed the Eureka Institute International Certificate in Translational Medicine. She is currently the Chair of the Advisory Board of the Menzies Institute. She was awarded a post-graduate certification in transactional competence in 2021 through Influential U. In 2022, she was awarded the Janet Dibb-Leigh Award for Distinguished Services to Research Management presented by ARMS. Moira founded Moira Clay Consulting Pty Ltd in 2013, propelled by her drive to help Australian health and medical research leaders achieve transformative health benefits for the community. MCC has built a strong reputation for adding value to health and medical research organisations across Australia.
Program Description:
Research funding is becoming increasingly competitive with success rates now generally 10% or less. Research organisations are increasingly looking to diversify funding sources and build the competitiveness and impact of their researchers. Research management professionals frequently face challenges with delivering research funding programs including ensuring alignment of funding schemes with organisational strategy, developing relevant criteria for funding, securing sufficient resources to manage funding schemes, managing compliance with national codes, approach to consumer involvement in peer review, use of external peer reviewers and monitoring return on investment. This elective will provide a practical guide for research management professionals in research organisations to deliver a research funding program that aligns with best practice principles.
This elective is applicable to anyone setting up or managing a funding scheme.
Pre-requisites:
The elective has no formal pre-requisites. The elective is intended for:
- Mid-senior level research management staff interested in developing a deep, practical understanding of the topics; and
- ARMFs - ARMS Accredited Research Managers (Foundation) or ARMAs - Accredited Research Managers (Advanced) seeking to broaden their practical understanding of the topics.
Pre-reading:
Each elective has a list of suggested pre-reading materials that are emailed to participants prior to the commencement of the workshop. The pre-reading list will also serve as a future resource list for participants.
Assessment:
At the end of the workshop, participants will be invited to complete a non-compulsory assessment; due two weeks following the end of the elective or advised by the presenter.
This assessment is compulsory for participants currently paticipating in the ELAP, those who will be registering in the Established Level Accreditation Program (ELAP) within 12 months of completing this Elective or those seeking CPD.
Cost:
ARMS Members: $585 AUD per elective (GST inclusive) - Price will be discounted in the Shopping Cart.
Non-Members: $685 AUD per elective (GST inclusive)
CPD: Accredited members (ARMAs and ARMFs) will automatically accrue 8 CPD hours per elective. Registered ELAP participants who successfully complete the assessment will receive 10 ELAP points.

Should your circumstances change, and you are unable to attend this workshop, you must contact ARMSAccreditation@researchmanagement.org.au by no later than 10 working days prior to the commencement of the scheduled event. ARMS will refund the full registration fee minus any administrative fees.
Should you cancel less than 10 working days prior to the commencement of this workshop, no refund will be payable but instead you may wish to send a proxy.
ARMS reserve the right to cancel, postpone or re-schedule courses and events due to minimum numbers not being reached or for other unforeseen circumstances. In the event of a cancellation, ARMS will aim to advise all participants in writing five (5) days prior to the scheduled event and will refund the full registration fee including administrative charges within 30 days after notification.
