This module looks at types of legislation, jurisdictional issues, understanding legislation, and the legal status of research institutions. It also covers general legislative obligations in research, as well as research specific and project specific legislation. Delivered online via the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS), this module is designed to support flexible, self-paced learning.

Key learning outcomes

After completing this module, Research Management Professionals should be able to:

  • Describe how legislation and legislative frameworks affect research in Australia;
  • Formulate appropriate questions to ask about a project to be able to proactively review project proposals and identify (“issue spot”) possible legislative compliance issues and risks for their organisations;
  • Identify when legal advice is required on particular legislative issues and know what the process is for doing this within their organisations;
  • Understand that compliance risks arising in a research project can be managed and that organisations have difference systems in place for managing risk;
  • Identify which legislative requirements require ongoing monitoring and management for a particular project;
  • Identify who should, for legislative reasons, be consulted or involved in a particular deal; and
  • Know where to go for further information and advice on a particular legislative issue.

Note: This is a compulsory module for participants in the ARMS Foundation Level Accreditation Program (FLAP) in Australia. It may also be undertaken independently for professional development.

Program Materials, Access and Assessment

  • The module is delivered online via Moodle unless otherwise specified.
  • All intellectual property rights in the module content remain with ARMS. Reproduction without prior written consent is prohibited.
  • You may not reproduce any part of the module material without the prior written consent of ARMS.
  • In the event of LMS unavailability, ARMS will provide alternative access to materials.
  • All assessments, including quizzes, must be completed within Moodle.

Fees

  • ARMS Members: $405 AUD (discount applied at checkout)
  • Non-Members: $505 AUD

Note: Payment is accepted via credit card only. For tax invoices payable by EFT or your institution, please get in touch.

Registration

  • Members: Log into your ARMS account to register.
  • Non-Members: Sign in using your free web friend account or proceed with registration.

Module Access Time

Participants have two (2) weeks to complete the module from the time they begin it in Moodle (not from the registration date).

Getting Started

Once registered and payment is confirmed, the module will appear under Online Courses in your ARMS portal. Click the module title under Enrolled Courses to access Moodle.

ARMS complies with Australian Consumer Law in regard to refunds.  We ask that you carefully select the module before submitting a Registration as the Registration is non-cancellable and the Registration Fee is non-refundable

We understand that under extenuating circumstances, there may be reasons why the Registrant is unable to complete the registered module.  Where evidence can be successfully provided to support the Registrant’s circumstances, consideration may be given to transfer the Registration to another eligible ARMS member.  Such requests must be made in writing.
