Join this interactive session to learn first-hand about the breadth of career opportunities available within research administration and management field.

Hosted by the NSW ARMS Chapter, this event will feature ‘meet the ARMS President’, followed by a panel discussion with staff from the university sector, as well as Research Management professionals from other industries.

They will share their insights on their research management journey, career opportunities, progression and diversification.

Drinks and nibbles will be provided. Please ensure that you advise of any dietary requirements in the registration process, if you register to attend the event in-person.

As this is a hybrid event, please indicate if you will be attending via zoom or in-person. 

In-person registrations are encouraged and limited spots are available.

The online session will be recorded and photos will be taken at the event. If attending in-person, please let us know if you wouldn’t like your photo to be taken on the day.

Dr Julian Zipparo

Executive Manager, Research Office, University of Technology Sydney

Dr Julian Zipparo is a senior research management leader who has worked in the sector for over 20 years. He has worked at three different universities: Macquarie University, UC, and UNSW, as well as at the Australian Research Council. His areas of expertise include research funding, engagement, policy and management, as well as research strategy development at both faculty and institutional levels.

At UTS Julian Zipparo works within the UTS Research Office, and oversees the Faculty Research Engagement Manager (FREM) and Research Grants teams. He has acted as the Director of the Research Office, and has overseen and been involved in many varied strategic projects in collaboration with many other areas around the institution. Julian acts as a mentor to a number of current and previous staff and colleagues, and enjoys supporting others to develop their careers in higher education and their understanding of the sector.

Sunil Chand

Coordinator - Systems, Process Enhancement and Innovation, Research Support and Innovation Team

Sunil has an extensive and diverse professional background. He has a passion for the transformative power of data, and its ability to inspire and empower individuals and organisations, enabling them to make informed, evidence-based decisions

His professional experience spans two decades across two countries; Fiji Islands and Australia. He commenced his career in Fiji in the field of epidemiology. In Australia, he has worked with three Universities in Research Data Management and played a crucial role in their reporting and ranking exercises.

He is currently the Coordinator - Systems, Process Enhancement and Innovation within the Research Services Office of Western Sydney University. He leads special projects and initiatives to enhance service quality and operational practices, drive process innovation and optimise administrative and reporting functions.

Tanya Karliychuk

Director of Operations - Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN)

Leading the Grants & Research sections for a non-government consumer representation body, Tanya is especially passionate about the important work achieved from community-sector research collaborations. Tanya’s career is a mix of the university and NFP sectors, having worked in research-related roles at Macquarie University (HREC support), University of Sydney (research assistance), and ANU (projects & research writing).

Tanya has written, won and delivered large government grants in the international development sector, as well as small community sector grants for various volunteer projects. Tanya oversees ACCAN’s grants distribution on behalf of the federal government as well as the organisation’s commissioned research program. With her experience in the not-for-profit sector, Tanya hopes to bring alternative perspectives and learn from others supporting research in non-traditional spaces.

Tanya is currently Co-Convenor of the NSW Chapter of ARMS and holds a Master of International Affairs from ANU and a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons) from Macquarie University.

 

 

 

 

Dr Jane Hobson 

Former Senior Advisor, Research Management at Cancer Council NSW

Jane Hobson has held senior research management positions in the university and not-for-profit sectors. Over two decades, Jane’s experience has been across all aspects of research management, and she has led teams with responsibility for: HDR and supervisory policy and programs, ethics and integrity, pre-and post-award, data analytics and performance, and communications. Most recently, Jane has led a $10m annual research funding program for Cancer Council NSW. In this role, Jane has also nurtured the role of consumers working with researchers, and in proposal assessment with the aim of bringing research impact closer to realisation.

Jane’s greatest passion and most daunting challenges have been as a change agent, developing and implementing strategy and policy. Jane has been an active member of ARMS for two decades and has been a recipient of an ARMS conference travel scholarship, unfortunately during the pandemic. She encourages all ARMS members to carry on the tradition of energetic dancing at conference dinners.

Dr Tania Bezzobs

Director, Research Office, University of Technology Sydney & ARMS President

Dr Tania Bezzobs is a senior research management leader who has worked in the sector for over 20 years.  Tania is President of Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS), which she has held since late 2021. As a passionate ARMS member, she has been convenor of the Victorian Chapter, conference organiser and program chair for two ARMS/ INORMS conferences, active in various ARMS Special Interest Groups and is an ARMS Training Fellow.

Tania commenced in her current role at the University of Technology Sydney in August 2022. Prior to that she held senior roles as Director/ Executive Director at Swinburne University of Technology and at the University of Melbourne. Her responsibilities have included business development, intellectual property management and commercialisation, grants and contracts administration, and research funding strategy and development.

Mr Stephan Waibel (MC)

Senior Research Grants Manager, Research Office, University of Technology Sydney

Stephan Waibel has been working in research management for over 12 years, both in Australia and the United Kingdom. In the last 12 years, he worked at different Universities: University of Technology Sydney, King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London, as well as a not-for-profit organisation, Royal College of Surgeons of England.

At UTS, Stephan held various positions in a UTS Faculty and the UTS Central Research Office. Since returning from the UK, Stephan manages the University’s research grant portfolio, as Senior Research Grants Manager in the Central Research Office.  

Stephan is the co-convener of the NSW ARMS Chapter committee, passionate about supporting career development in higher education and always happy to catch up for a coffee.


CPD: Accredited members (ARMAs and ARMFs) will automatically accrue 2 CPD hours for attending this session.

ARMS reserve the right to cancel, postpone or re-schedule courses and events due to minimum numbers not being reached or for other unforeseen circumstances.  In the event of a cancellation, ARMS will aim to advise all participants in writing five (5) days prior to the scheduled event and will refund the full registration fee including administrative charges within 30 days after notification.
