PRESIDENT'S UPDATE
June 2020

One of the guiding principles for research and researchers is to create a better world.

Research and innovation create opportunities for increasing sustainable value creation and finding answers to major challenges. Through the generation of new knowledge, research provides people with opportunities and influence, as well as a foundation for making wise choices. It changes attitudes, mindsets, and how we interact with and perceive the world around us.

Irrespective of the discipline, or where it is conducted, most research is relevant and translatable to society’s big questions around promoting prosperity, wellbeing, quality of life, fairness and security for all.

 

We, as research management professionals, are committed to enabling this research to happen and for it to have impact in and on society.

 

As an organisation, ARMS is also looking to adopt practices that are driven by the principles of sustainability, equity, diversity, and respect. These include approaches to reduce travel and to minimise waste at our conferences and events; an expectation of gender balance on panels and striving for diverse representation on our groups and governance structures; and ensuring proper acknowledgement for the rich culture, history and knowledge of our First Nations peoples at our events and a focus on First Nations Research through dedicated conference streams.

 

There is still much more that we can, should, and will do. ARMS will continue to work with our members and member organisations to learn from best practice.

 

If the need for improvement wasn’t intuitively clear, current events bring this into sharp focus. I write this as National Reconciliation Week draws to a close in Australia, and crowds fill the streets of cities across the world to protest injustice, discrimination, and racism.

 

Creating a fairer society requires action from everyone. Now is the time for each of us to demonstrate our personal values of respect, integrity, diversity and inclusion – not to mention courage.

 

The ARMS community must always be one where every member can feel safe and be assured that they are treated with equal dignity.

 

Now, more than ever, we must remember our mission and our purpose: to enable research excellence. Where research is learning, acting, and educating others to establish equity and justice for all.

Update from the ARMS Board 


 

The Society is abuzz with activity and opportunities to engage with your peers.  Here is a snapshot of what is currently on offer:

 

Next week ARMS will be hosting its first special virtual event on 'Managing through and emerging from the Crisis' - please refer to article in this newsletter for further details. 

 

PD Sessions @ Zoom - Members will have access to a range of one-hour webinar offerings free of charge on a range of topics pertinent to the profession.  Refer to separate article in this newsletter for full details. 

 

Delivery of Foundation Level Accreditation Program (FLAP) - While the FLAP has traditionally been delivered in a face to face workshop style, ARMS is continuing to transition some of its workshops to online meetings using the Zoom platform.   We have also restricted the number of registrations in each workshop to increase participant engagement. We expect to roll out more elective modules starting in July 2020.

 

In response to the high demand for the delivery of ARMS compulsory Foundation Level modules:

 

Module 1.1-Aus: National Research and Innovation System in Australia;
Module 1.2-Aus: Legislation as it Affects Research in Australia; and
Module 1.3: Understanding Research and Researchers,

 

ARMS is currently converting Modules 1.1-Aus, 1.2-Aus and 1.3 to fully online LMS offerings which we expect to have available in late July/early August. We will continue to provide updates on all the modules via emails or in the newsletters.  

 

Advanced Level Accreditation Program (ALAP) – Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the ARMS Board has recommended the postponement of the ALAP until 2021. Although, while the program in its entirety will not be offered, one element will - Element 2: Electives and this will form the basis for the 2020 ARMS Winter School. For those participants enrolling in Winter School Electives, credit can be obtained on these courses if you successfully complete the post workshop assessment AND enrol in the entire ALAP within a two year period. Please refer to article below regarding the 2020 Winter School. 

 

ARMS Winter School 2020 - A wide range of workshop topics is offered in 2020 as follows:

Latest News 

ARMS Member's Portal Operational Guide Now Available

The Society launched a fully integrated website and portal on the 12th of March 2020.   

 

A much needed overhaul of the existing system was required to enable a more streamlined integration of our accounting system and e-way, our communication platform and the integration of a Learning Management System (LMS) as we start to transition more accreditation and professional development offerings online.

 

To assist members in navigating through the new website and portal, the Executive Office has compiled a new Member's Portal Operational Guide.  

 

 


Survey on professionals at the interface of science working at funding, policy and other science and innovation related organisations

We would like to invite you to take 10-15 minutes of your time to participate in the study entitled “PIoS - the missing link”. This study aims at better understanding the different profiles of professionals at the Interface of Science (PIoS) working at science funding/policy/observation agencies and their participation in professional organizations. 

 

Your responses will be kept confidential. All the data will be anonymised.

 

Participation in this study is entirely voluntary. However, we believe that your participation will be valuable to our research and findings that could lead to a better recognition of your profession. We expect that your contribution to this study will provide greater awareness of the profession, from a worldwide perspective. We hope to contribute to the recognition of the specificities of these professionals and provide recommendations on professional frameworks, training, development, and associations.

'Managing through and emerging from the Crisis'

As the world around us rapidly changes, research management has never been more agile, responsive and connected. How are individuals and the sector responding to challenges the pandemic has created? From crisis management to opportunities for innovation.

 

Scheduled across 2 days (Wednesday 10th June - Thursday 11th June 2020), this ARMS online event will provide the chance to hear from key funding agencies, be inspired by a panel of Deputy Vice Chancellors and participate in interactive virtual networking. MENTAL HEALTH IN A COVID-19 WORLD 

COVID-19 has changed the way we communicate, we work and we connect with one another on a daily basis.

ARMS has created a dedicated resource page as an additional support to members. This resource page provides examples of the many number of dedicated organisations there to support you through these unprecedented times.

Members are also invited to view the recent webinar on “Mental Health and Relational Safety in a COVID-19 World” presented by Professor Nicholas Procter, RN MBA PhD from UniSA.

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD) UPDATE!

Accredited Research Managers (Foundation) or ARMFs and Accredited Research Managers (Advanced) or ARMAs, are now able to lodge CPD claims via the CPD diary in their member portals. Whereas we previously sent a link to supervisors for approval, members are now requested to attach a supporting email from their supervisor or other supporting documentation  to the claim. Please note:

 

  • ARMS will now automatically approve CPD that has accrued from your registration and attendance to a PD Sessions @ Zoom or attendance at an ARMS in-house event, such as the annual ARMS conference. The number of CPD hours accrued for these events will be listed on the event registration page and will automatically accrue to your CPD Diary. 

 

  • Completed modules will now be listed in the CPD Diary.  Those individuals who are not Accredited will see these entries in the diary with "0" hours of CPD.  Those Accredited members that have completed additional modules over and above the minimum modules required for accreditation will see the relevant hours accrued in their CPD Diary.

 

  • We are still working with our Portal Developer to rectify a data migration issues resulting in some modules not being shown in a member's portal as completed courses. Thank you again for your patience while we transition through this process.

Chapter and SIG Updates/Events

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chapter and Special Interest Groups (SIGs) have been instructed to consider alternative ways to deliver local events.  Some of these events now form part of the PD Sessions @ Zoom series, enabling all ARMS members access to much needed content during this period. Stay tuned for future events within your SIG!

 

The ARMS SIGs are a great way of connecting with the ARMS community. Please note that through the transition to the new website, it is required that you re-join your SIG group through the portal. Please view instructions here, how to complete this. 

 QLD/NT/PNG Chapter Committee Vacancies - Join today!

 

The QLD/NT/PNG Chapter Committee has openings for all committee member positions, including the Convenor, Secretary, Treasurer and General Members.


The term of a committee member is two years for no more than two consecutive terms (i.e. up to four years in total).


The Chapter Committee offers a chance to engage with like-minded colleagues from other parts of the research management sector, build networks and to help the Chapter host occasional events to build skills and engagement within the other ARMS members. There are also opportunities to contribute more broadly across the Society through the Member Services Committee.

NTRO Community of Practice Webinar: Navigating the complexities of research quality assessment in NTROs

 

Recognising the lack of appropriate tools and metrics for assessing and rewarding research in the creative arts, humanities and social sciences, UNSW undertook a pilot project in 2018 to develop and implement discipline-appropriate measures, underpinned by rigorous, peer review, to incentivise and enhance the quality of research for practice-based researchers, and address institutional reporting and evaluation needs. The project’s aim was to harness existing research management systems to establish an assessment process for non-traditional research outputs (NTROs) based on global best practice in research performance measurement as set out in the Leiden Manifesto and the San Francisco Declaration (DORA). In this webinar, Vanessa and Jeremy will discuss the ongoing implementation of their process to assess the quality of NTROs at UNSW, and how that feeds into the preparation of their ERA submissions. UNSW achieved more ERA top ratings in broad fields of research than any other university in Australia.

Bibliometrics for Research Management and Evaluation – PD Sessions @ Zoom #3

 

The session, facilitated by the South Australian Chapter, provided an overview of how bibliometric data can support research management in order to explore an organisation’s research strengths, opportunities and challenges. The presenter outlines how to use publication analyses to demonstrate the academic impact of your organisation's research.

Accreditation, Professional Development and Training 

ARMS Foundation Level Accreditation 2020 Program

 

Due to COVID-19 restrictions affecting the face to face delivery of Foundation Level modules, ARMS has made the decision to move some of the Foundation Level modules to online learning platforms.  Modules scheduled prior to July 1st, 2020 will now be delivered via Zoom. Some modules have been successfully delivered via the Zoom Meeting platform with feedback being sought from the participants.

 

ARMS is pleased to announce that more modules will be delivered over the next several months via Zoom. Please see the list below for those modules which we are currently confirming as Zoom Meetings. Registrations for these modules should be opening, or reopening, over the next few weeks. In order to maintain a reasonable number of participants in each meeting, registrations will be capped at 16 members per module.

Once the modules are confirmed as Zoom Meetings, the delivery details will be modified and registrations will reopen. Members who registered for modules prior to them closing, will retain their registration booking and be offered positions in the new modules scheduled to be delivered via Zoom.

 

 

The availability of programs and dates indicated below are subject to change and confirmation. Should current restrictions be lifted, ARMS will endeavour to confirm the following module offerings as face to face deliveries.

2020 ARMS WINTER SCHOOL 

The ARMS Winter School is a popular feature in the Society's annual professional development calendar. This year’s program offers seven (7) new and or enhanced electives for research management professionals who wish to develop a deeper understanding of a particular topic and its application to research management.

 

To enable easier accessibility, electives will be delivered in a flexible format via the online Zoom platform. This delivery approach will involve structured, shorter meetings with the presenter(s), and breakout rooms for participants to collaborate. The sum of the shorter online meetings will equate to a full day workshop. During the workshops, participants will develop knowledge and skills in a specialised, relevant area, network with other participants and have an enjoyable time!

 

Interested participants can enrol in one, two or more electives as stand-alone professional development programs. The electives can count as credit towards future participation in the ARMS Advanced Level Accreditation Program (conditions apply) or as CPD for ARMFs and ARMAs.  Details are available on the ARMS website.
