Module 3.1: Higher Degree by Research Scholarships - 07 July 2026

The purpose of this module is to provide an insight into the current and evolving practices around the management of scholarships for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates.

This module will provide an understanding of the basic principles, purpose and financial implications underlying HDR scholarships, the rules governing scholarships and scholarship offers, and the reporting requirements associated with scholarships.

This module also provides an understanding of common national and international scholarship schemes and the management and reporting requirements associated with scholarships.

Key learning outcomes

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

• Understand the role of scholarships in HDR education and university research;
• Effectively manage and report domestic scholarships;
• Determinw a scholarship allocation model for your university;
• Establish industry and externally funded scholarship programs (see also the HDR International Partnerships module);
• Work with foreign agencies, including governments, that allocate fully funded scholarships;
• Establish joint scholarships with foreign governments; and
• Access and promoting funded mobility programs.

Accreditation Pathway

This module forms part of the ARMS Professional Development Framework under the “Higher Degree by Research Candidature Cycle”, along with:

• Module 3.2: Higher Degree by Research International Partnerships
• Module 3.3: Higher Degree by Research Candidature Management
• Module 3.4: Higher Degree by Research Admissions and Completions

While it is recommended that this module is undertaken in conjunction with the other HDR modules to support a comprehensive understanding of the HDR lifecycle, this is not mandatory.

The module may be completed as a standalone professional development activity or as part of a broader ARMS accreditation pathway.

Participants from all regions may enrol.

• Access to the Body of Knowledge (pre-reading), any additional study material, and the Zoom access link will be distributed approximately ten (10) days prior to the workshop.

Cancellation Policy:

Should your circumstances change, and you are unable to attend this workshop, you must contact the ARMSAccreditation@researchmanagement.org.au by no later than 10 working days prior to the commencement of the scheduled event. ARMS will refund the full registration fee minus any administrative fees.

Should you cancel less than 10 working days prior to the commencement of this workshop, no refund will be payable but instead you may wish to send a proxy.

ARMS reserve the right to cancel, postpone or re-schedule courses and events due to minimum numbers not being reached or for other unforeseen circumstances.  In the event of a cancellation, ARMS will aim to advise all participants in writing five (5) days prior to the scheduled event and will refund the full registration fee including administrative charges within 30 days after notification.
