Module 1.3: The Research Ecosystem and the Role of Research Management Professionals 

The only "soft skills" module in the Foundation Level Accreditation Program, The Research Ecosystem and the Role of Research Management Professionals gives participants a broad understanding of research, research organisations, researchers and Research Management professionals and the ecosystem that they work within. 

Key learning outcomes

This module consists of two separate, but interlinked, parts:

   (i)  a focus on research and research organisations, and

   (ii)  roles and responsibilities of researchers and research management professionals.

After completing this module, participants should be able to:

  • Define and understand research and approaches to conducting, using and classifying research
  • Understand the research lifecycle, and the role of researchers and research management professionals.
  • Appreciate the broad scope of organisations that conduct and facilitate research
  • Understand the variety of disciplines, cultures, foci, roles and responsibilities of researchers
  • Understand the scope and definition of a research management professional
  • Understand the research ecosystem, and the entities that play a role in the ecosystem internal and external to research organisations
  • Proactively identify how to navigate the different cultures, pressures and expectations that can exist between researchers and research management professionals
  • Appreciate the benefits of training and development, and continuing professional development, for both researchers and research management professionals.

Who should take this module?

This foundational module outlines the research ecosystem and is recommended for those who are new to the research management profession, those who have specialised in one area of research management and wish to broaden their knowledge and/or those who are experienced research managers but wish to refresh their knowledge in a specific topic area. We also encourage researchers to engage with this module. Researchers and research management professionals from all organisations will benefit from this module including those from:

This is a compulsory module for individuals completing the ARMS Foundation Level Accreditation Program in all regions. Each module can also be taken as a stand-alone unit for professional development purposes.
