How to Start - Succession Planning and Building Knowledge Integration
Presented by Danielle O'Brien - Edith Cowan University, Facilitated by Sanita Kratina, Edith Cown University
Wednesday 19 August 2026
This was a professional development session on succession planning and knowledge integration in research administration, presented by Danielle O'Brien, a research administration coordinator at Edith Cowan University. Danielle shared practical strategies for implementing effective succession planning, including identifying and nurturing potential leaders, implementing structured mentorship programs, delegating tasks, investing in professional development, and building knowledge repositories through documentation and regular updates. She emphasized the importance of knowledge integration both internally through team collaboration and externally through networking at conferences and reaching out to colleagues for best practices. The presentation addressed common challenges in research administration, such as managing departures, maintaining business continuity, and ensuring that critical knowledge is not held by a single person. Danielle stressed that while perfect succession planning may not be achievable for everyone, starting with small steps like identifying potential leaders and documenting processes is better than doing nothing at all.
