2 Electives On Offer

Developing your research management capabilities has never been more important than at present! ARMS electives offer a deep dive into current issues that will enhance your understanding of the topic and better equip you as a research management professionals. These two electives offered in our "Spring School" are returning by popular demand. Both were fully subscribed when offered in the ARMS Winter School (June 2020) and address issues of immediate relevance - "Business Improvement Processes" and "Assessing the Societal Benefits of Research.”

To enable easier accessibility, electives will be delivered in a flexible format via the online Zoom platform. This delivery approach will involve structured, shorter meetings staggered over multiple days with the presenter(s), and breakout rooms for participants to collaborate. The sum of the shorter online meetings will equate to a full day workshop. During the workshops, participants will develop knowledge and skills in a specialised, relevant area, network with other participants and have an enjoyable time!

Interested participants can enrol in one or two electives as stand-alone professional development programs. The electives can count as credit towards future participation in the ARMS Advanced Level Accreditation Program (conditions apply) or as CPD for ARMFs and ARMAs.


Pre-requisites

The Spring School has no formal pre-requisites for the electives featured in the 2020 program. The electives are intended for:

  • Mid-senior level research management staff interested in developing a deep, practical understanding of the topics; and
  • ARMFs - ARMS Accredited Research Managers (Foundation) or ARMAs - Accredited Research Managers (Advanced) seeking to broaden their practical understanding of the topics - Note: ARMFs and ARMAs will automatically CPD hours if completing an elective. 

Assessment

At the end of the workshop, participants will be invited to complete a non-compulsory assessment

Those participants who wish to enrol in a future cohort of the Advanced Level Accreditation Program (ALAP) are strongly encouraged to successfully complete this assessment as this will count as credit towards the ALAP, provided enrolment commences within the next two years.    

Special Discounted Elective Rates for 2020

ARMS Members: $550 per elective (GST inclusive)
Non-Members: $650 per elective (GST inclusive)

Please note that the price will be discounted at the checkout for ARMS members.

The cost for each elective includes participation in the workshop, workshop notes and an assessment. Participants will be required to cover any other incidental costs. 
At a minimum, participants will be required to log into Zoom using a laptop or computer and not a phone.

Continuing Professional Developmental (CPD)

ARMFs and ARMAs will automatically accrue 8 CPD hours per elective.

The Spring School registration portal is expected to open officially 10 October 2020.

The Spring School electives are expected to be delivered between  late October and early November 2020.


ASSESSING THE SOCIETAL BENEFITS OF RESEARCH

With many calls on government’s public purse and research budgets becoming tighter, the ability to demonstrate the real-world impact of research is being seen as increasingly important. This elective examines the role of research managers in supporting the impact of research. 

It examines the definitions of research impact, looks in detail at impact models and pathways to impact from both the literature and practice. National research impact assessment mechanisms are discussed including the difference between impact measurement and assessment. This elective will also include a brief examination of the recent discussion papers on impact and engagement.

The workshop includes helpful information for research managers in establishing research impact tool kits and promoting impact literacy within research performing institutions. It will also include an overview of recent Australian discussion papers and impact assessment in the UK's 2021 REF.


BUSINESS PROCESS IMPROVEMENT IN RESEARCH MANAGEMENT

Many of us want to demonstrate how we can be more effective and efficient in the workplace. How, as research management professionals, we understand the needs of our researchers, our partners, our senior executive, and our supervisor. Yet, often we are so busy with business as usual activities, that setting aside time to identify and analyse a current process, and consider ways to improve the process, can seem too much. Learning how to map a current business process, to redesign a process and develop metrics to monitor the impact of the process improvement, can help.

This course, written by Bryony Wakefield, Research Services Solutions, and Simon Stewart, Bespoke Client Solutions, will introduce you to process improvement methodologies, with a focus on how to develop your own value stream map to improve a research management process. You will also learn about the value of cross-functional teams and how agile ways of working can enable you to better refine priorities and continually improve processes.
