Spring School Elective:
Managing Complex Strategic Partnerships

This elective is delivered over three (3) partial days:

  • Monday 08 November 2021, 11:00am - 2:00pm AEDT
  • Monday 15 November 2021, 11:00am - 2:00pm AEDT
  • Monday 22 November 2021, 11:00am - 2:00pm AEDT

Participants are required to attend all three (3) sessions.

Presenter: Mr Mark Berlage, M Phil (Higher Education), Research Partnerships Manager, Macquarie University and Guest Presenters

The benefits of highly collaborative research are widely accepted, and the involvement of a wide range of partners along with the globalisation of research is now commonplace. However, the development and management of these complex partnerships needs to be approached strategically and managed sensitively and actively to ensure outcomes are achieved and risks minimised.

This module considers a variety of potential strategic research partners including:

• International researchers and research institutions;
• Industry partners, with a focus on those with a vested interest;
• Indigenous and other culturally sensitive partners;
• At risk groups or communities; and
• Philanthropic partners, with a focus on tied investment.

This elective aims to help participants to identify and evaluate prospective partnerships for both opportunities and risks and provide insights about how these might be managed and communicated. Where relevant, current guidelines and legislation are provided and discussed, and the policy environment considered. Upon completion, participants will have an appreciation of a range of complex research partnerships and how to develop and manage these to support high quality research outcomes.

The Spring School has no formal pre-requisites for the electives featured in the 2021 program. The electives are intended for:

  • Mid-senior level research management staff interested in developing a deep, practical understanding of the topics; and
  • ARMFs - ARMS Accredited Research Managers (Foundation) or ARMAs - Accredited Research Managers (Advanced) seeking to broaden their practical understanding of the topics.


  • A link to the pre-reading material will be emailed to participants approximately 4 weeks prior to the start of the workshop.
  • Attendees will also be asked to bring their own workplace case study example to be workshopped, enabling them to apply critical and creative thinking to understanding and working with inherent complexities and to help secure senior management buy-in and support. A Case Example Template will be included in the Event Notification emailed to participants.


At the end of the workshop, participants will be invited to complete a non-compulsory assessment; due 13 December 2021.

Those participants who wish to enrol in a future cohort of the Advanced Level Accreditation Program (ALAP) are strongly encouraged to successfully complete this assessment as this will count as credit towards a future ALAP, provided enrolment commences by the end of 2022.

Non-Members: $650 per elective (GST inclusive)

CPD: Accredited members (ARMAs and ARMFs) will automatically accrue 8 CPD hours per elective.

Should your circumstances change, and you are unable to attend this workshop, you must contact the arms.adminofficer@flinders.edu.au by no later than 10 working days prior to the commencement of the scheduled event. ARMS will refund the full registration fee minus any administrative fees.

Should you cancel less than 10 working days prior to the commencement of this workshop, no refund will be payable but instead you may wish to send a proxy.

ARMS reserve the right to cancel, postpone or re-schedule courses and events due to minimum numbers not being reached or for other unforeseen circumstances.  In the event of a cancellation, ARMS will aim to advise all participants in writing five (5) days prior to the scheduled event and will refund the full registration fee including administrative charges within 30 days after notification.
