SIG Event - online

We are excited to welcome Dr. Sarah Cutfield — grant development specialist and founder of GrantCraft — to our next Research Development SIG meeting! Join us as Sarah shares insights into the emerging research field of research development, setting the stage for an open discussion on best practices in professional development for research development professionals. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain fresh insights, share your experiences, and help shape the future of our SIG!

Research development as a field is primarily constituted of three areas of study: researcher development, grant development and institutional research strategy – this taxonomy is reflected in the three streams of our own Research Development SIG. In the existing literature on research development, researchER development has received the lion’s share of attention. Sarah will set out to address some of this imbalance by defining grant development (including grantcraft and grant science) and situating this definition within the broader literature on research development.

Following Sarah’s presentation, session participants will be invited to examine the distinctions and commonalities among grant development, researcher development, and research strategy as areas of practice. Together, we will consider whether differences in practice require specialized skills and expertise, and if these skills specialisations in turn call for distinct approaches to professional development.

The meeting will conclude with the identification of best-practice strategies across the three areas of practice and how the SIG can support and facilitate their implementation. Our aim is to collaboratively develop a blueprint for next year’s activities. Your insights, experiences, and contributions will be essential in shaping the future direction of our SIG.
