Wake up and clear the air with an open panel discussion of experienced research managers as they reflect on their beginnings in research management and shed light on the diversity of their career success pathways.
Join ARMS members that are based in South-East Queensland as part of the QLD/NT/PNG Chapter Mid Year celebrations of 2026.
Slow down and take a moment to look over the horizon of the many possibilities in research management. This event recognises the diversity of backgrounds needed in research management by highlighting the cross-linking skills and opportunities that make a successful career and the opportunities that put wind in your sails.
Panel speakers have been invited to share how they started in research management and were lifted through support for promotions and secondments. Grab a hot drink with them and think about how you can breathe life into your career and get an early start on your success story.

Presenters
Tony Wang - The University of Queensland
Tony currently works as Research manager, Dutton park precinct, Faculty of health, medicine, and Behavioural sciences at The University of Queensland. He is a highly motivated research operations and project management professional with over eight years’ of experience working in research institutions and the higher education sector. He is passionate about professional development and empowering the workforce with mentoring and fostering collaboration between universities and external stakeholders. Tony’s wealth of knowledge and skills stems from industry experience in governance and compliance, strategic partnership and relationship management, and business development across multiple research management roles.
Luke Rutledge - Queensland University of Technology
Luke is an experienced professional with a robust career profile of outstanding service in the areas of higher education research, finance, and administration. With over seven years of experience in the higher education sector, Luke has been with QUT since 2019 and has been supporting Faculty of Health research since 2020 with all aspects of financial administration to support both academics and professional staff.
Commencing as a Centre Manager in 2023, Luke supports the Cancer and Palliative Care Outcomes Centre, a leading transdisciplinary health services research centre embedded within the Centre for Health Care Transformation at QUT.
Sharm Aboosally - Griffith University
Sharm Aboosally is an Associate (Business and Social Innovation) within Griffith Enterprise at Griffith University, where she supports and identify new commercial partnerships and commercialisation deals of strategic interest and impact to the University (within the HASS sector).
Prior to this, Sharm served as Senior Commercial Research Officer at Griffith Enterprise, where she provided specialist advice on complex consultancy, commercial research, and intellectual property matters. She has acted as a subject matter expert (SME) for the implementation of a new research management system in the University. She worked previously in the International Development Office at Griffith International and in that capacity, has developed and managed tenders for the Federal Government, Asian Development Bank, World Bank, and international donors, including the Australia Awards Fellowship Program with 27 Fellowships valued at over $6 million awarded for Africa, Asia (Indonesia, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Vietnam) and the Pacific (Vanuatu, Fiji) and tourism short courses (AUD $2.8M total) for Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
Previously, Sharm was the Program Manager for the Tourism Communications Project (a US$3.4 million program to promote Sri Lanka’s tourism industry) and a Coordinator for The Competitiveness Program, working with export industries in Sri Lanka, and has worked as a trade journalist in Hong Kong.

Should your circumstances change, and you are unable to attend this event, you must contact ARMSMembership@researchmanagement.org.au by no later than 10 working days prior to the commencement of the scheduled event. ARMS will refund the full registration fee minus any administrative fees.
Should you cancel less than 10 working days prior to the commencement of this workshop, no refund will be payable but instead you may wish to send a proxy.
ARMS reserve the right to cancel, postpone or re-schedule courses and events due to minimum numbers not being reached or for other unforeseen circumstances. In the event of a cancellation, ARMS will aim to advise all participants in writing five (5) days prior to the scheduled event and will refund the full registration fee including administrative charges within 30 days after notification.
