QLD Chapter - Behind the Research: A Showcase and Social for Professional Staff - Cairns - 11 August 2026

12:00pm Tuesday, 11 August 2026
2:00pm Tuesday, 11 August 2026
Chapter Event - in person

Research doesn't happen without the people who make it work. This event is a chance for professional staff across JCU to step out from behind their desks, meet the people in other teams doing similar work, and hear how colleagues work in other teams.

Four short presentations. Good food. And time to actually talk to each other.

Join us for Behind the Research — a two-hour showcase and social as part of JCU Research Festival.

Brendan Francis
James Cook University

Brendan leads the domestic marketing team at JCU.  Whilst is focus is on student recruitment, he recognises the value that promoting JCU’s research, facilities and opportunities can have in attracting students to JCU.  With that in mind, he led the JCU Science campaign in 2025 which leveraged our location, facilities, field and research trips to produce marketing content for the university.

Anne Penny
James Cook University

Ann is Chief Operating Officer for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures.  In this role Ann supports the day-to-day Centre operations as well as long term operational and strategic outcomes.  She supports researchers, not only at JCU, but external stakeholders and researchers at other partner institutions.

Hannah Cameron
James Cook University

As Manager of the Advancement team, Hannah leads strategic initiatives to enhance alumni engagement and drive fundraising efforts.  Hannah will explore how philanthropic funding supports research and innovation, how it differs from government funding and how JCU is engaging with alumni and donors to build a culture of giving.

Facilitator/Host

Tania Wilmann
James Cook University and ARMS Committee Member

Tania leads Research Strategy and Performance at JCU, where she has spent the past five years working across research performance measurement, communications, and impact. She is an active member of the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) and co-convenes the Research Information, Systems and Evaluation special interest group.

Behind the Research is Tania's attempt to do for JCU what ARMS does nationally — bring people with shared interests together so they can learn from each other and make connections that last beyond the event.
